Cross country
season is upon again folks and I’ll be harassing you poor souls until you
decide that standing around in a freezing cold field in a howling gale is
preferable to my nagging. For the old hands you need read no further just look
at the fixtures dig out your spikes hack the mud off them and go to which ever
muddy swamp you’re commanded to.
Now you the
unsullied X Country virgins and newbies lend me your ears/eyes. First the good news
male, female, young or old as long as you can stand upright and you are not a
border collie (sorry Korky) you’ve made the cut and you are in the team The
whole shebang kicks off at 11’0’clock Sunday 25 October at Clark Gardens
You’ll be
racing for the club against other clubs in the Northwest Country League and you
will be racing against your fellow club members for the glory of the PLS Cross Country
championship which is awarded at the AGM.
What do I need
to wear? I hear you cry, your usual kit and a pair of off road shoes something
with a bit of grip will do. If you’re keen a pair of x country spikes might
suit you. For most of the courses we race I find them the best option.
Unlike road
races these races aren’t about times we are scrambling for places. The first 6
men and first 3 women are our counters in the races but those who aren’t
counters help to push the other teams further down the table thus increasing
our score.
The races are
about 4 miles long and range from the very straight forward playing fields of
Walton Park to the mud-tastic wild hills of Beacon Park.

Frank Martin
